Distinguished and Famous people from Maribyrnong

🏉 Ted Whitten

Ted Whitten grew up in West Footscray, where neighbourhood games could involve improvised balls made from socks, paper or school caps. His later football was rather more formal: 321 games for Footscray, a place in the 1954 premiership side and lengthy service as captain and coach. Celebrated for his versatility and competitive personality, he became one of the game’s most recognisable figures. Whitten Oval preserves the name at the club’s Footscray home. His story joins backyard ingenuity with elite sport, while remaining firmly rooted in the western suburbs.

🏉 Doug Hawkins

Doug Hawkins made the wing at Whitten Oval his own during a Footscray career stretching from 1978 to 1994. He played 329 games for the club, breaking Ted Whitten’s long-standing record, and captained the side from 1990 to 1993. A best-and-fairest award and representative honours reflected the quality behind his popularity. His skill with the ball gave supporters something to savour even when the team’s fortunes were less comfortable. The Bulldogs elevated him to club Legend status in 2014, recognising a sustained contribution to the sporting life of Footscray.

🏏 Ray Steele

Ray Steele was born at Yarraville in 1917 and attended Geelong Road State School in Footscray. He later combined law with high-level sport, playing for Richmond and serving as vice-captain of its 1943 premiership team. Cricket administration became his principal public contribution: he managed Australian overseas tours and led the Victorian Cricket Association for almost twenty years. During the World Series Cricket dispute he initially opposed the breakaway, then helped open the discussion that led towards a settlement. Yarraville and Footscray belong to his early life, before the boardrooms, touring teams and difficult negotiations that shaped his later career.

📚 David Dexter

David Dexter lived in West Footscray during a childhood shaped by his father’s work as an Anglican clergyman. He went on to study history, serve as a commando officer and join the Department of External Affairs. In 1947 and 1948 he accompanied H. V. Evatt to United Nations General Assembly sessions. Dexter later helped prepare the Martin Report on Australian universities and oversaw grounds and building development at the Australian National University. His career ranged from jungle warfare to diplomacy and campus planning, with historical research running alongside the administrative work.
